Here’s a fascinating video about how photographer Michael Paul Smith creates and photographs Elgin Park, a 20th century town created through miniature 1/24th-scale models. Smith mixes his carefully crafted model sets with die-cut automobiles and real-life backdrops, taking advantage of an optical illusion known as forced perspective. The photos have been a massive hit with the internet, racking up over 70 million views on his Flickr account alone.

The photographer recently sat down with documentary director and producer Danny Yourd of Animal to discuss his significant personal challenges and life experiences that are now the driving force behind his photography. He is preparing to publish a new book called “Elgin Park”, which is available now for preorder. Everything in each of Smith’s scenes was made by hand – well, everything except the 1/24th-scale diecast car models. Danny Yourd wanted to give the world a glimpse of the brilliant mind behind the images, so the publishing group interviewed Smith and captured some behind-the-scenes footage of projects coming together.

Many cultures around the world are based on the theory that our souls are immortal, that spiritual part of us never age, and that the age is just the representation of human perception of life. Although you might think that those theories are based on myths, you must admit that there is a bit of truth there. Why should we set the boundaries in the way society defines “normal”? If you feel young, why does it matter how old you are? The problem is, everyone pictures getting old as a horrible process, people even stopped celebrating birthdays because it is a reminder that they are getting older, and there is still a lot of things they want to do with their life. As if fun stops as soon as you turn 60 or when you retire. Well there are a few people that would like to prove you wrong.

Seniors of the Contilia Retirement Group in Essen, Germany, have banded together and recreated twelve scenes from the movie classics, and had a time of their lives, while shooting. Those funny guys from a nursing home, ranging from 76 to 98 years old, have dressed up as movie stars, and recreated scenes from James Bond, Titanic, The Seven Year Itch, Breakfast at Tiffany, Mary Poppins, Rocky, Blues Brothers, Easy Rider, Giants, Dirty Dancing, Saturday Night Fever and Cabaret. Some stylists, and props, clothes, and accessories were supplied by a costume shop and the photos were done by a professional photographer from Gladbeck so these young at heart seniors felt like Hollywood stars. At the end, they managed to produce a calendar that unfortunately isn’t produced worldwide, but only for family members, employees of the nursing home, and themselves, so there were reportedly 5,000 calendars printed. Anyhow, they also managed to make people around the world smile, and understand that age is just a number.

Victor Hertz is a Swedish freelance photographer and graphic designer with a passion for film. Often seen on signs or instruction manuals, pictograms serve as our universal language, a way for all of us to quickly figure out where we’re going or what we’re (not) allowed to do. With this ongoing project, he’s striving to find a balance between the current minimalist poster trend and not being boring … even in black and gray, we think he’s right on target.

He says: “What I do, is that I make a quite simple movie poster, including one or a few pictograms, displaying the theme of the film. Either original pictograms combined, or modified ones, to fit with the film. As the title poster says, I try to bring a twist to it, and not get too simple. I can sometimes feel that all these minimalist movie posters get a bit boring, a bit too simple, with just an object from the film and the title underneath it.”

More often than not, the cars featured in movies are more popular than the stars themselves. For example, The Mach Five is instantly recognizable by Speed Racer and anime fans alike. You will probably recognize most of these cars and trucks as they were used in different movies. Some are very rare and beautiful, some look old and ratty, but they all are special.
