When one thinks of Roman entertainment, savage fights between prisoners and animals and chariot races come to mind. Chariot races were usually held in the circus, the gladiator fights were the domain of the amphitheaters. The combats between criminals, prisoners or war, slaves and animals are a testament of the character and life of the Romans who considered these combats good training for a nation of warriors. Occasionally, free citizens would even enter the fight to enjoy their 15 minutes of fame.

The first Roman amphitheaters were built in the 1st century BC from wood and were designed by rotating and joining two theaters built back-to-back so that they formed an oval. About 230 amphitheatres have been found across the width and breadth of the Roman Empire. Many of these are still standing in different states of preservation, and quite a few of them still holds regular events like music concerts till this date.

Verona Arena

The Verona Arena in Italy is the world’s third-largest amphitheater to survive from Roman antiquity. It’s outer ring of white and pink limestone was almost completely destroyed during a major earthquake in 1117 but the inner part is still amazingly well preserved. The Arena in Verona was built in 30 AD and could host 30,000 spectators. The Roman amphitheater has been used continuously throughout the centuries to host shows and games: gladiator fights during Roman times, jousts and tournaments in the Middle Ages and from the 18th century until the present day the arena is the setting for Verona’s spectacular opera performances.

Pula Arena

The amphitheater in Pula is the sixth largest surviving Roman arena and one of the best preserved ancient monuments in Croatia. The Pula Arena was built around the 1st century AD and could seat over 26,000 spectators. In the 15th century many stones were taken from the amphitheater to build houses and other structures around Pula, but fortunately this practice was stopped before the whole structure was destroyed. Today it is used to host a variety of festivals and performances during the summer months.

Roman Arena in Arles

The Roman Arena is one of the most popular tourist attraction in the city of Arles in southern France. It was built around the 1st century BC and was capable of seating over 20,000 spectators on three tiers. From 1830 until the present day the arena has been used for hosting bullfights, which the Romans certainly would have approved as it is only slightly less brutal as the chariot races and bloody hand-to-hand battles they themselves enjoyed.

Amphitheatre Nimes

Built at the end of the 1st century AD to seat 24,000 spectators, the Arena of Nîmes was one of the biggest Roman amphitheaters in Gaul (present day France). During the middle ages a fortified palace was built within the amphitheater. Later a small neighborhood developed within its confines, complete with 700 inhabitants and two chapels. In 1863 the arena was remodeled to serve as a bullring and today it host two annual bullfights as well as other other public events.

The new Canadian passports look completely normal to the uninformed. There’s an information and photo page, along with the typical numbered pages covered with softly shaded Canada inspired imagery. But put the new passports under a UV light and everything changes.

It’s normal to have passport security features that are revealed by black light, but this is something special. The “secret” UV images are cleverly incorporated into the parts of each page that are visible under normal lighting so that the two complement each other when seen under UV light. Glowing maple leaves and fireworks pop from the page. It’s like a party is secretly happening under your nose.

These images, along with a biometric chip in the back of the passport, are all security measures designed to ensure that duplicating or forging a passport would be as difficult and complicated as possible.

Fast food is a beast like no other. Over the years, chain restaurants have started to scrap their Super Size Me ways and even begun offering smaller portions. Still, many of the meals at some of our favorite guilty pleasures would be lying if they called themselves healthy – but just how unhealthy are they?

Taking popular American restaurant chains, such as Chipotle, Shake Shack, Potbelly, and comparing it with home cooked meals, this story shows an insightful look into the amount of calories one unknowingly ingests during a meal at one of these places. For reference, most adults should consume 1,600 to 2,400 calories a day. Some of these single meals well exceed that.

During our commute, most of us will resort to listening to music, reading, or staring at the window and pondering the meaning of life. But illustrator Joe Butcher, has come up with a creative way to spend his time, he draws new heads for his fellow commuters. Sure the drawings are pretty silly, but why not have a good time commuting right? Try this next time you’re on a bus, train or subway, and share the results!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and when it comes to some of the most ghostly abandoned places around the world, every single one of which has its own special charm. There is nothing more haunting than a once-thriving town that has been abandoned and consumed by the elements. Here are images from some of the most incredible ghost towns in the world.

Pripyat, Ukraine

Pripyat, a city of nearly 50,000, was totally abandoned after the nearby Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. Due to radiation, it has been left untouched ever since the incident and will be for many thousands of years into the future. Nature now rules the city in what resembles an apocalyptic movie.

Mirny Diamond Mine – Eastern Siberia, Russia

The world’s second largest man-made hole, Mirny was constructed by Stalin to satisfy the Soviet Union’s demand for industrial diamond. Further digging efforts were eventually abandoned when it became too difficult to continue digging this massive hole.

Sanzhi UFO Houses – San Zhi, Taiwan

These homes were intended to be sold to U.S. military officers when construction began in 1978. In 1980, work was halted due to loss of investment.

Six Flags Jazzland – New Orleans, Louisiana

Severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina, Six Flags Jazzland has been abandoned since. Several of the rides still stand, a testimony to the resilience of New Orleans. Several companies have plans to develop the park, but until then it will remain as the perfect setting for a horror movie.

Gulliver’s Travels Park – Kawaguchi, Japan

Constructed in the shadow of Mt Fuji, this theme park opened in 1997. Despite financial help from the Japanese government, it lasted only 10 years before being abandoned.

Bannerman Castle – Pollepel Island, New York

Bannerman Castle’s owner, Francis Bannerman VI, built the structure as storage space after buying the American military surplus from the war with the Spanish. After 200lbs of ammunition exploded in 1920, much of the castle was destroyed and the rest abandoned.

Chateau Miranda – Celles, Belgium

The castle was originally built by French aristocrats fleeing the revolution. During and after World War II, Miranda Castle was used as an orphanage. It was abandoned in 1980, with the family refusing to allow authorities to care for the structure. Because of its past, this haunting castle remains a favourite amongst ghost hunters.

Abandoned Coal Plant – France

Hashima Island, Japan

In the past Hashima Island was rich in coal, with over 5000 miners once living on the island. When petrol replaced coal as Japan’s main source of fuel, the settlement was left abandoned. Now the once thriving town is creepily abandoned, with only shadows remaining.

City Hall Station – New York City, New York

City Hall Station was built in 1904 and closed in 1945 as only around 600 people used it only a daily basis.

Wreck of the SS America – Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

This former United States ocean liner was wrecked in 1994 after 54 years of service.

Abandoned Domino Sugar Factory – Brooklyn, New York

Red Sands Sea Forts – Sealand, United Kingdom

Originally built during World War II to protect the River Thames, these forts are now lifeless. Except for those that have been claimed by Sealand, a micronation off the shore of England.

Michigan Central Station – Detroit, Michigan

Built through 1912 and 1913, Central Station served as the passenger rail depot for Detroit and was the tallest train station in the world. With the closure of the line in 1988, Central Station fell into disuse and all restoration plans have failed.

Dadipark – Dadizel, Belgium

A simple playground, Dadipark opened in the 1950s and closed in 2002.

Czestochowa Train Depot – Poland

The following graphs are made by Danish writer Mikael Wulff and artist Anders Morgenthaler. They focus on some of the most hilarious and mundane of the things we face every day, and then, they make an awesome graph about it. Their graphs are simple and funny visualizations of facts, struggles and problems of everyday life. The best part, though? They’re all SO TRUE.
