This series of intimate photographs from the 1970s of Neil the lion carries a chilling backstory that should remind us all that, no matter how much we might love them or feel close to them, we will never truly understand the mind of a wild animal.

When Griffith was a teenager, her actress mother, Tippi Hedren, and her stepfather, director Noel Marshall, decided they wanted to make a film about big cats after returning from a trip to Africa and seeing them in person. An animal trainer suggested they get to know them better by living with a lion, so they ended up taking Neil into their home.

Their life with Neil seems to have been nice, but their movie, Roar, didn’t go quite so well. Melanie required 50 stitches after being attacked by a lioness that was part of the film, and cinematographer Jan de Bont had to have his scalp sewn back on. 70 people wound up being injured by the movie’s cast of 150 large predatory cats. The movie cost more than 17.5 million and made 2 million.

This is Zeus, a blind starry-eyed owl who currently lives at the Wildlife Learning Center, Sylmar, California. Owls are incredible creatures that we don’t get to see up close and personal all too often. For one, they are excellent at camouflaging during the day, hiding in trees with their eyes closed tight so that you can pass one and never even know they are there. So you can imagine the surprise one Southern California family got one morning when they opened their door and found an injured owl on the porch.

Zeus flew directly into the wall of a house and bumping his head. Though clearly scared, he was largely okay. The reason Zeus flew into the wall in the first place has to do with him being almost completely blind. They couldn’t simply release him into the dangerous wild so they kept him in the Center. Since he had mesmerizing starry eyes, they named him Zeus, the Greek God of the sky and thunder.

Now Zeus is a full-time resident of Wildlife Learning Center, bringing happiness to every visitor. Zeus is very friendly and loves to be near people, so if you’re ever in California, be sure to visit him and his friends in the Wildlife Learning Center.

Have you heard about pigs that can swim? Or the pigs that love attention? No? Well, now you did. The Big Major Cay, the island located in the Bahamas is also known as Pig Island or Pig Beach. There you will find a paradise on Earth, crystal clear water splashing white sand wile pigs are running around seeking for the attention. It’s one weird conception of paradise, but it really exists. This island is uninhabited when it comes to humans, but, wild pigs on the other hand have taken over, and became really good swimmers. 20 swimming pigs are shearing their home with few stray cats and goats (but we still don’t know how good swimmers are goats or cats).

There are few different explanations of how did they get there. One of them is that sailors left them there, so they could have a meal after returnig from sea adventures. Sailors never came back, so the pigs were left there to live and reproduce, and they fed on the food that passing ships were leaving there. The other legend says that pigs were survivors of shipwreck and managed to swim to shore. Also there is a theory that is all about marketing and business, so the pigs are there to draw the attention of tourists, and amuse them. Anyhow, they live there, and according to the photos, they are having great time. Tourists are constantly feeding them, and in return pigs are posing to them and making their stay at Big Major Cay unforgettable.

Eric Cheng, a photographer that was on the Pig island said: “Because locals bring food, the pigs will run into the water and actually swim out to the oncoming boats, as if to greet them individually. It is strange enough to see pigs laying around on tropical beaches of white sand, but to see them then charge into the water to greet oncoming boats is just bizarre.” There is actually a book written about this island and it’s entitled The Secret of Pig’s Island by Jennifer R. Nolan.

Sophie Gamand is a French photographer living and working in New York. Since 2011, with both a documentary and artistic approaches, Sophie has been dedicating her photography to exploring the complex dynamics in the relationship between pets and their owners. This complex relationship between dogs and humans is very co-dependant. However, we see them as our life companions, and they see us as their whole world. That is what this project “Wet dog” is about.

The reflection of human behavior in dogs is the inspiration for her. Sophie Gamand wants others to see dogs for what they are: more than just animals. These fun series of dogs righ after bath, capture the moment of human emotion in them. We all know how dogs “love” taking baths, so it is funny to see how realistically these little fellows react to the water and shampoo. Some of them pretend everything is all right even though they are very scared, and others can’t hide their feelings of misery, surprise ot even anger in their eyes. But, it is more than important to note that none of this fur balls was harmed during the process of shooting because this is a part of necessary routine for them. Water and shampoo for dogs helps prevent diseases and infection.

Sophie’s work also includes vet clinics, rescue groups, grooming, and the world of Doggie moms who play dress up with their dogs. Also, there is the aesthetic aspect of grooming. The series was done in collaboration with groomer and pet stylist Ruben Santana, whose creative, colorful and extreme makeovers have captured the essence of dog beauty. In these photos you can see dogs in their vulnerability and confusion, the way water plays with their fur and amazing portraits caught in the right moment. Sophie makes us wonder: Are dogs still animals? Or are they the new children of a human community that is increasingly disconnected?

The fennec fox or fennec is a small nocturnal animal found in the Sahara of North Africa, and it’s recognized by it’s unusually large ears (it’s ears are the largest relative to body size) which it uses to keep cool since it’s hot in desert. They have a mature weight of just 2 – 3.5 pounds, with a soft, thick, short coat that is off white on the underside and reddish or tawny on the back, with some black markings on the back and tail. It is so small, cute and adorable that in some countries it’s considered as an popular exotic pat. Despite all the cuteness and their “dog-like” behavior, they need to be carefully socialized, since they aren’t domesticated. It’s an active, quick and agile animal, and it needs an outlet for their energy (some owners have taught them to fetch like dogs). Sure, they are clean but the enormous level of curiosity will make them get into anything and everything, so if you are planning to keep this animal as your pet, be aware that in some corner of your closet might be a little dusty. Also, there is no a perfect diet for these fluffy little monsters since they feed themselves while in the wild, with insects, rodents, plants, fruit, and reptiles. But most owners will feed a mix of dog food, cat food, vegetables and fruit with good success. Some breeders will alternatively recommend a diet of raw meat, vegetables, and a vitamin mix. Also, if you would like to have this animal as your pet, you should prevent it form escape. Since they are so curious, they adore digging and outdoor enclosures must be designed to prevent them from digging under or climbing over the fence, both of which they will do quite readily.

These are some tips if you already like fennec fox, but if you don’t here are some pictures of the cutest animal in the world.

I am often thinking about the pretty interesting fact that humans are capable to love their pets as same as they are their kids. I myself was thinking that you have to be stupid to love a cat or something similar. It was pretty funny and little bit disgusting for me to see a man or a woman hugging their cat, dog, rabbit or whatever else and keeping it as the member of family, until I myself somehow got in possession of one tomcat which suddenly became the inseparable member of our family. By the way, I will have to apologize to the dog owners who might be reading this, I still do think that dogs are not even close as cool as cats are. So, if you’re not a pet owner you might want to become that after watching this collection of some of the cutest photos of pets.
