The art and science of engineering has provided us with many of our most incredible modern achievements: bridges, skyscrapers, automobiles, and space flight, just to name a few. One modern marvel that often goes unnoticed, however, is something that [virtually] all of us use: toilet paper. Ingeniously wrapped around a roll that spins freely on a dowel, the efficiency with which toilet paper is dispensed is truly amazing. However, orientation, remains a societal conundrum. While modern engineering has determined which method is likely to be more efficient, the general population largely ignores the laws of physics and simply follows their personal preference. So which is it, over or under? There has yet to be a conclusive answer, but the debate has been one of the most captivating mankind has ever known. If you’re still on the fence, check out this infographic by Engineering Degree, which analyzes each position from a scientific perspective.
