Tired of playing dry football? How about trying it in the river? The annual Burton-on-the-Water football match is an old tradition that still manages to draw the interest of thousands of football fans. It’s not entirely clear how the idea of playing a football match in a river first got started, but the tradition has reportedly been going strong for around 100 years. Goal posts are set up under the bridges and players brave the cold knee-deep water wearing nothing but bright coloured football shorts or fancy dress. Bourton Rovers 1st and 2nd team players sloshed through their wettest match of the season on Monday, August 30, and was watched by over 1,000 spectators.
