It wasn’t the first time we posted about upside-down House, however, we have to say, this house just push another limits of how detailed an upside-down house can have. In Krasnoyarsk, Russia, the house has been built as an insolite attraction in order to attract local residents or tourists, featuring a parking lot, a small landscape area, a living room, a powder room, a kitchen, a kids room and more.

When you comes into the house, everything just flip upside-down. Imagine yourself standing on the ceiling and looking at all the things hanging over your head, how magical it is! Moreover, if you want to trick people’s eye and take some illusion photos, just flip your camera, then everything in the room looks on the ground but you now own some superpower – sticking on the ceiling and hanging in the air.

Like many others, Mike Hudson longed to exchange the monotony of work and everyday routines for a life filled with adventure and travel. After giving away most of his worldly possessions, he started converting a rundown, 10-year-old van into a mobile home he calls “Vandog”. The rust-covered LDV Convoy, which Hudson had bought on eBay, required five months of hard work before it was successfully turned into a livable home, complete with a timber-lined interior with an extendable bed, a large hammock, small office area, lots of storage space, a sound system, refrigerator, a gas burner, sink, a shower, toilet, a pressurized water system (hot water on demand), and even solar-powered LED lighting. An LPG cylinder stores gasoline (used for power) that can be refilled cheaply at petrol stations.

In March 2014, after completing his van, Hudson drove Vandog from his native Hull to the south of England, where he boarded a ferry and crossed the pond. Since then, he has traveled all over Europe, driving across countries like France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and Austria. The 25-year-old traveler shows no signs of slowing down his whirlwind adventure, as he wishes to continue experiencing all that life has to offer from the comfort of his wonderful, mobile home. To keep up with Hudson’s journey, check out his blog, Vandog Traveller.

We've all heard about the lost city of Atlantis, but did you know there are dozens of other underwater cities that are equally as amazing and perhaps just as mysterious?

The post Incredible Underwater Cities You'll Want To Discover appeared first on Media Dump.

Many years ago, before huge earthquakes and flood, these cities were amazing places to live and to see. All of them represent significant archaeological findings in recent history. The others are in some way more mysterious in origin. All of the keep some secrets that we may never know. Here are five incredible underwater cities you’ll want to discover:

Lion City of Quiandao Lake, China

Hailed as the most spectacular underwater city in the world, China’s Lion City certainly is a marvel. Built in Eastern Han Dynasty at roughly 25-200 CE and spanning about 62 football fields in area, today Lion City can be found 85-131 feet beneath the surface of Thousand Island Lake, an area that was intentionally flooded in the 1950s to create a dam. The sculptures that decorate the city rival the beauty of even Alexandria so it’s little wonder that Lion City is now one of China’s most popular tourist destinations.

Port Royal, Jamaica

Once a notorious hub for pirate activity, prostitutes, booze, and raging all-night parties, Port Royal was once branded ‘the most wicked and sinful city in the world’. That was so until June 1692 when a massive 7.5 earthquake shook the island of Jamaica, sucking Port Royal into the ocean due to it’s unstable foundations and killing over 2,000 of it’s inhabitants. Was this earthquake a fatal natural accident or was it retribution for all the sins committed within the cavity? For hundreds of years people believed the latter. In the years since then the infamous city, once one of the largest European cities in the New World, has continued to sink and now it lies forty feet below the ocean. The sunken city is a hive for archeological exploration as amazingly many near-perfect artefacts are still being unveiled from the site.

The Pyramids of Yonaguni-Jima, Japan

To this day experts still argue over whether the Yonaguni Monument which lies underwater just off the coast of Japan is man made or simply a natural occurrence. While there is evidence to support the natural theory, looking at the terraced stones and triangular shapes that which make up the pyramid it’s hard to believe such a monument could occur naturally. The pyramid rises a massive 250 feet from the sea floor and is a constant lure for scuba-divers for obvious reasons. If the structure was manmade, experts suggest it was likely built during the last ice age at roughly 10,000 BCE.

Dwarka, Gulf of Cambay, India

The ancient city of Lord Krishna was once thought to be merely a myth but ruins discovered in 2000 seem to be breathing life into the old Indian tale. The story goes that Lord Krishna had a magnificent city which was made up of 70,000 palaces made of gold, silver, and various other precious metals. The city was prosperous however upon Lord Krishna’s death Dwarka supposedly sank into the sea. The ruins are situated 131 feet beneath the ocean surface in the bay of modern-day Dwarka, one of the seven oldest cities in India. Acoustic studies have shown the ruins to be amazingly geometric, stunning experts.

Cleopatra’s Palace, Alexandria, Egypt

Just off the shores of Alexandria lies what is believed to be the palace of Cleopatra, an ancient Egyptian queen. It is believed that the ruins were cast into the sea by an earthquake over 1,500 years ago and lay dormant until recent years. Along with the royal quarters, archaeologists also believe they have found the temple of Isis alongside them. To date, more than 140 artifacts have been uncovered from the site and experts now believe they have located the tomb of Cleoplatra and an ancient museum within the ruins. Hopefully the ruins will be opened up to divers and tourists in the years to come, allowing us all to have a closer look at the marvel that is Cleopatra’s palace.

James Mollison is presenting a photo essay and fine art book that represents the variability of lifestyles seen through children portraits and the photographs of places where they sleep. Economic inequality, children’s rights, and how we are defined by our possessions and formed by our circumstances are some of the complex issues that he is trying to present through his work. Some of the places where children sleeps can hardly even be considered as bedroom, since there is no bed or no walls, because some of the kids are sleeping outdoors.

James Mollison says One can learn a lot about a child by looking at their face, dress, or body language, but to really understand what matters most to a child, one must enter that private sanctuary their bedroom. So, here you can see Ahkohxet, an 8 year old boy who sleeps on the floor somewhere deep in Amazon jungle, Brazil. Also, a 6 year old boy named Bilal who sleeps outdoors with goats in Wadi Abu Hindi, he is a Bedouine and in The West Bank that might seem as a normal circumstances , but if you take a close look at the place you will see that there is absolutely no conditions to raise a child. Indira is a 7 year old Nepali girl who has worked since she was three years old in granite quarry and on 4 year old Kaya is spent $1,000 per month. Those are just few of examples in this amazing and educative photo essay. There are also young girls in Kyoto who are in Geisha training and they sleep on the floor of a tea room and at least five of them shares the same bedroom. Mollison was born in Kenya in 1973 and grew up in England and today he lives in Venice.

This art designer and photographer has created the exhibition for pre-adolescent viewers, the social, typological and cultural issues described in the work are meaningful to an adult audience.

The whole world is waiting for August 2 when U.S. could default on it’s spending obligations if the compromise between Congress and Obama wouldn’t happen. Let’s see how large the US national debt actually is, using the well-known $100 bill.

One Hundred Dollars

$100 – Most counterfeited money denomination in the world. Keeps the world moving.

Ten Thousand Dollars

$10,000 – Enough for a great vacation or to buy a used car. Approximately one year of work for the average human on earth.

One Million Dollars

$1,000,000 – Not as big of a pile as you thought, huh? Still this is 92 years of work for the average human on earth.

One Hundred Million Dollars

$100,000,000 – Plenty to go around for everyone. Fits nicely on an ISO / Military standard sized pallet.

One Billion Dollars

$1,000,000,000 – You will need some help when robbing the bank. Now we are getting serious!

One Trillion Dollars

$1,000,000,000,000 – When the U.S government speaks about a 1.7 trillion deficit – this is the volumes of cash the U.S. Government borrowed in 2010 to run itself. Keep in mind it is double stacked pallets of $100 million dollars each, full of $100 dollar bills. You are going to need a lot of trucks to freight this around. If you spent $1 million a day since Jesus was born, you would have not spent $1 trillion by now…but ~$700 billion same amount the banks got during bailout.

One Trillion Dollars

Comparison of $1,000,000,000,000 dollars to a standard sized American Football field and European Football field. Say hello to the Boeing 747-400 transcontinental airliner that’s hiding on the right. This was until recently the biggest passenger plane in the world.

15 Trillion Dollars

$15,000,000,000,000 – Unless the U.S. government fixes the budget, US national debt (credit card bill) will topple 15 trillion by Christmas 2011. Statue of Liberty seems rather worried as United States national debt passes 20% of the entire world’s combined GDP (Gross Domestic Product). In 2011 the National Debt will exceed 100% of GDP, and venture into the 100%+ debt-to-GDP ratio that the European PIIGS have (bankrupting nations).

114.5 Trillion Dollars

$114,500,000,000,000. – US unfunded liabilities. To the right you can see the pillar of cold hard $100 bills that dwarfs the WTC & Empire State Building – both at one point world’s tallest buildings. If you look carefully you can see the Statue of Liberty. The 114.5 Trillion dollar super-skyscraper is the amount of money the U.S. Government knows it does not have to fully fund the Medicare, Medicare Prescription Drug Program, Social Security, Military and civil servant pensions. It is the money USA knows it will not have to pay all its bills. If you live in USA this is also your personal credit card bill, you are responsible along with everyone else to pay this back. The citizens of USA created the U.S. Government to serve them, this is what the U.S. Government has done while serving The People. The unfunded liability is calculated on current tax and funding inputs, and future demographic shifts in US Population.

Flanked by police with shields and batons battling a riot following the Vancouver Canucks NHL loss, a young couple kissed.

The striking image has been splashed around the world over the past few days and now the couple has been identified. The mystery identity of the couple kissing while lying on a Vancouver street as riot police battled crowds following the Canucks’ Stanley Cup loss has been revealed as Australian Scott Jones and his Canadian girlfriend Alex Thomas.

Scott has been in the country for six months, working as a bar tender while he tries to make it as a stand-up comedian. Alex is a student at the University of Guelph in Ontario and the couple have not been dating long.

“They were between the riot police and the rioters, and the riot police were actually charging forward, and Alex got knocked by a [police] shield and fell to the ground,” />

“Everything happened so fast that there was just massive confusion all around. I was trying to understand what was going on. The photo was definitely not something we expected to happen,” />

As a proud left-hander, I can tell you being in this minority group has its pros and cons. Apparently 15% of the American population is left-handed. That number really stands out to me since I have always thought that the number of left-handed people was way more. So, all you left-handed people, you can keep being left-handed and not worry about having to switch. We are all one big happy family of right and left-handed people.

According to Scientific American, 15%of people are left-handed. Males are twice as likely to be left-handed than females.

Left-handers are more likely to be geniuses – 20% of all MENSA members report being left-handed.

YAY! A study found left-handed men are, on average, 15% richer than right-handed men for those who attended college, and 26% richer if they graduated.

BOO! Left-handed people are three times more likely than right-handed people to become alcoholics.

If born parents are left handed, 50% of their offspring will be left-handed. Two righties only have a 2% chance of having a lefty.

Psychologist from Queen’s University Belfast found that female cats are more likely to be right-pawed, while male cats tend to be left-pawed.

Lefties are more likely than righties to really, really hate spiral notebooks.

Research conducted by Dr. Nick Cherbuin shows that lefties are better at handling large amounts of stimuli, making them naturally better at playing video games.

Left-handers are believed to reach puberty 4 to 5 months after right-handers.

Living in a righty’s world: only 50% of lefties report using a computer mouse with their left hands. Similarly, 68% use their right hand for scissors and 74% hold a dinner knife in their right hands.

Defying the odds: 4 of the 5 original designers of the Mac computer were left-handed. Of the last 5 presidents, 3 are left handed (Obama, Clinton, Bush Sr.)

According to one study, lefties have an average lifespan that is nine years fewer than that of righties.

For the fifth year in a row, crime is down in the United States, according to FBI Statistics. The 2010 statistics show a 5.5% drop in violent crimes from last year’s report. But parts of the country are getting worse. These are America’s 10 most dangerous cities ranked by violent crimes including murder, robbery, and aggravated assault, per 100,000 people.

Flint, Mich.

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 22

The number of violent crimes committed in Flint increased for all categories considered for this list between 2009 and 2010. Perhaps most notably, the number of murders in the city increased from 36 to 53. This moves the city from having the seventh highest rate of homicide to the second highest. The number of aggravated assaults increased from 1,529 to 1,579, a rate of 14.6 assaults per 1,000 residents, placing the city in the No. 1 rank for rate of assaults. Flint police chief Alvern Lock stated late last year that he believed the city’s violence stemmed from drugs and gangs. Flint has a relatively small median income of about $27,000 per household. The city also has a poverty rate of 36.2%.

Detroit

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 18.9

The city crippled the most in America’s post-industrial era is almost certainly Detroit. The Motor City has suffered from high rates of unemployment, homelessness, and crime. The city has one of the ten highest rates for three of the four types of violent crime identified by the FBI. Detroit has the sixth highest murder rate, the fifth highest robbery rate, and the second highest rate of aggravated assault. In 2005, a major reorganization of the city’s police department took place after a federal investigation identified inefficiencies within the system. According to an article in The United Press, opponents of Detroit Mayor David Bing called for further intervention by the Justice Department in several shootings that occurred last year.

St. Louis

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 17.5

Violent crime in St. Louis fell dramatically between 2009 and 2010, and has decreased since 2007. Despite this, crime rates remain extremely high compared with other cities. In 2010, the city’s murder rate and rate of aggravated assault were each the third worst in the country. With regards to both violent and nonviolent crime, St. Louis was rated the most dangerous city based on FBI data released six months ago. As of December 2010, the murder rate in St. Louis was 6.3 times that of the state of Missouri. The city’s gunshot murder rate for residents between 10 to 19 years old is also the second highest in the country, behind only New Orleans, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New Haven, Conn.

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 15.8

New Haven has historically had the highest rate of violent crime on the east coast. The impoverished, crime-ridden parts of the city stand in stark contrast to affluent Fairfield county to the West, and elite Yale University, which is located within the city itself. The number of murders in the city doubled last year. New Haven has the eighth highest rate of robbery and the fourth highest rate of assault in the U.S. The New Haven Police Department is considering adding cameras at every intersection in one of the neighborhoods where shootings are the most common.

Memphis, Tenn.

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 15.4

Memphis has high rates for all the violent crimes considered for 24/7 Wall St.’s rankings. It has the sixth highest rate in the country. Incidents of violent crime in the city dropped slightly less than 15% between 2009 and 2010 though. Memphis Mayor AC Wharton attributes this decrease to Operation Safe Community, a citywide plan developed in 2005. The plan consists of a number of strategies meant to increase crime prevention, through toughening punishments for criminals, and the effectiveness of the city’s legal system, through changes such as expanding court programs so that they operate consistently and at full capacity.

Oakland, Calif.

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 15.3

Oakland’s violent crime dropped about 5.5% between 2009 and 2010, from about 6,800 to 6,260. The city nevertheless has the tenth-highest rate of rape, the ninth-highest murder rate, and the second highest robbery rate in the country. In 2010, there were 7.12 robberies for every 1,000 Oakland residents. According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, Mayor Jean Quan has attempted to combat break-ins and theft by creating programs to keep potential wrongdoers off the streets by starting late-night basketball programs. It it unclear if these policies have worked.

Little Rock, Ark.

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 15.2

Little Rock has one of the highest rates of aggravated assault and forcible rape in the country. Since 2009, reported assaults has increased while reported forcible rapes have decreased. According to Lt. Terry Hastings of the Little Rock Police Department, quoted by local station FOX16, Little Rock was “down almost 12 percent across the board on crime” in 2010. This may be accurate for many crimes, and especially nonviolent crimes, however, according to FBI data, violent crime increased from 2009 to 2010.

Baltimore

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 14.6

Baltimore had the eighth-highest rate of violent crime per capita in 2010 among cities with 100,000 or more residents, and the second-highest east of the Mississippi. The number of violent crimes has dropped slightly in the past year — from 9,600 to 9,300 — but the Maryland city has some of the worst rates of dangerous offenses in the country. This includes the tenth-worst aggravated assault rate — and the fourth-worst murder rate in the country.

Rockford, Ill.

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 14.5

Rockford has unusually high violent crime rates for a city of its size. Most notably, the city has the fourth highest rate of aggravated assault in the country, with 10.5 cases for every 1,000 citizens in 2010. During the same period, 20 murders occurred, almost double the number in 2000. Quoted by the Rockford Register Star in 2007, Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers said that he believed the city’s “location worked against [it,]” as Rockford receives traffic from the drug markets in Madison, Chicago, and Milwaukee, resulting in heightened rates of violence.

Stockton, Calif.

Violent Crime Per 1,000: 13.8

With a jobless rate of 18.4%, up from 18.1% a year ago, Stockton, California has one of the worst unemployment problems in the country. The huge percentage of unemployed residents may have contributed to horrible crime rates in the city, which is located 40 miles east of Oakland and San Francisco. Stockton was rated one of the most miserable cities to live in the country by Forbes in March, 2010. Violent crime was one of the chief measurements for its ranking. Of the 267 cities with populations over 100,000, Stockton has the 27th highest number of murders per 1,000 people and the 12th most aggravated assaults per 1,000. Last year, recognizing the crime problems in the city, the state temporarily diverted hundreds of California Highway Patrol officers to aid the city’s overwhelmed police department.

Every once in a while I stumble over some crazy article in the newspaper that reports about someone rich building a doomsday shelter or bunker to keep safe from whatever might strike earth in the near future. With the Zombie Apocalypse looming on the horizon (see 28 Days Later, Resident Evil, Dawn of the Dead, I Am Legend, The Walking Dead), it’s only natural that we would want to be as prepared as possible.

Nestled along the outskirts of Warsaw, Poland, this KWK Promes designed Safehouse is well on its way to being Zombie Apocalypse approved while still being more than worthy of gracing the covers of various modern architectural magazines. The only way to get in or out of this fortress is really through the drawbridge that swings down over the pool area outside. So if you truly want to make sure there are no zombies munching on your brains during the night, then I suggest you give the bright minds over at KWK Promes a call and hook yourself up with one of these houses pronto.

Idea
The clients’ top priority was to gain the feeling of maximum security in their future house, which determined the building’s outlook and performance.
The house took the form of a cuboid in which parts of the exterior walls are movable.
When the house opens up to the garden, eastern and western side walls move towards the exterior fence creating a courtyard.
After crossing the gate one has to wait in this safety zone before being let inside the house. In the same time, there is no risk of children escaping to the street area in an uncontrolled way while playing in the garden.

Movable elements interfering with the site layout
The innovation of this idea consists in the interference of the movable walls with the urban structure of the plot. Consequently, when the house is closed (at night for example) the safe zone is limited to the house’s outline. In the daytime, as a result of the walls opening, it extends to the garden surrounding the house

New type of building
The sliding walls are not dependent on the form of the building. That is why this patent can be applied to both modern and traditional, single- and multi – storeyed houses covered with roofs of different geometry.
This universal solution we came up with gives a new type of building where not the form but the way of functioning is the most important. The name: “safe house” gains a new meaning now.

Mechanic…
Accomplishment of this idea required the use of technically complex solutions. The most significant are the sliding walls (both 2,2 m high, 22 and 15 m long), which allow to interfere with the urban structure and determine the safe zone of the plot.
They are not the only mobile elements of the building. Apart from these, there are large shutters (all 2,8 m high, with a width ranging up to 3,5 m, opening up to 180 degrees) and a drawbridge leading to the roof terrace above the swimming pool.
The southern elevation is closed by an enormous roll-down gate of 14 and 6 m manufactured by a company normally supplying shipyards and air companies. It is made with white anodized aluminum which makes it possible to function as a movie projection screen.
All the movable elements are based on built-in electronic engines, that guarantee safe operation.
The whole building is a concrete monolith, while it’s mobile parts – for the sake of considerable size – are light steel trusses filled with mineral wool. As a result, the building is perfectly insulated when closed.
The whole house as well as the mobile elements are clad with cement-bonded particleboards – Cetris and waterproof alder plywood fixed to a steel construction and painted with dark wood stain, which resembles the wood widely found on the surrounding houses and barns, and makes it fit well into the rural landscape.

… to Organic
Once the house opens, it’s bright and spacious interior merges extensively with the garden.
Wide glazings behind the movable walls let the building acquire energy during the day (winter) or prevent the sun’s heat from going into the house (summer). At night, when the house is closed, the thick outer layer helps the building to accumulate the gained energy. Such a solution together with the hybrid heat system (most of the energy is gained from renewable sources – heat pump and solar systems supported with gas heating) and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery makes the house become an intelligent passive building.
Every day the house acts in a similar way – it wakes up every morning to close up after the dusk. This routine reminds of the processes occurring in nature – the house resembles a plant in its day and night cycle.
